For many students, college is their first experience living on their own and being fully responsible for themselves and their belongings. But there are ways to prepare that make this transition less strenuous.

There are numerous colleges in North Philadelphia such as Temple University or La Salle University, but regardless of which one you attend, it’s important to understand how to stay safe and handle emergencies.

To help, here’s a quick guide to some emergency and safety tips for North Philly college students:

Lock Outs: One of the most common issues college students run into is locking themselves out of their house or car. If you lose your house keys or lock your keys in your car, it’s wise to have a number saved in your phone for a 24-hour locksmith in Philadelphia.

Shootings: If you here gunshots and are in the vicinity of a shooting, get to a safe area as quickly as possible and take cover. Call 911 if you can and provide the dispatcher with your name, location, number of shooters if you know, and any other pertinent information about the incident that you might have. Stay in a safe spot until help arrives. If you’re in a building, stay away from windows and doors.

Fires: In the case of a fire, it helps to know where the nearest fire alarm is located and know the evacuation route you’ll have to take. Never use an elevator or escalator during fires and always evacuate buildings immediately when you hear a fire alarm.

Medical Emergencies: If you or someone you’re with is experiencing a serious illness or injury, call 911 for help. If you are trained to provide first aide, do so. But never put yourself at risk to help an injured or ill person.

Living on your own comes with extra responsibility and part of that includes preparing for the worst. So now hopefully you'll know what to do if disaster strikes.
